This
naturally transparent stone is a variety of Beryl
that is light to dark blue and blue-green. Pure
Beryl is white, and receives its blue-green haze
from iron compounds. It appears in six-sided crystals
that are perfect prismatic hexagons, growing individually,
and to enormous sizes. One formation was recorded
at 30 feet (about 8 meters) long.
This semiprecious stone is mined in Brazil,
Madagascar, China, India, the mountains of Russia,
and the U.S.A. Once thought to have fallen from
the jewelry chests of sirens, early sailors
wore Aquamarine as talismans, against the dangers
of the sea.
Imposters of Aquamarine are: Apatite, Quartz,
Feldspars, Topaz, and Tourmaline. Take care
in making sure you are purchasing true aquamarine.
It's a common gem, and relatively inexpensive,
but look-alikes can easily be portrayed as Aquamarine.
