A
distinct shade of yellow-green, peridot is a variety
of the mineral Olivine, and has a chemical composition
of Magnesium iron silicate. These dazzling gems,
once thought to radiate a light of their own,
were said to shine even as evening fell. This
may be the reason peridot is often called "Evening
Emerald."
Found primarily in Hawaii, the Red Sea of Egypt,
and Pakistan. Peridot most commonly occurs in
microscopic sizes. Large specimens are rare,
and highly desired. This lively gem is most
often used in jewelry settings, but has uses
as a flux for making steel, and as an ore of
magnesium.
Believed the birthstone of August only in modern
culture, peridot has been historically associated
with September, and is a zodiac stone for Libra.
Ancient Hawaiians believed these tiny gems
to be the tears of their volcano Goddess, Pele.
Egyptian priests were reported to drink a mixture
including ground peridot, to bring them closer
to their goddess of nature, Isis.
Common imposters of peridot are topaz, emerald
(a much darker green), apatite, garnet, and
tourmaline. Take precautions with any peridot
purchase, to ensure authenticity.
