Amethyst, historically the February birthstone in Arabic, Ayruvedic, Hebrew, Italian, Modern, Polish, Roman, and Russian cultures; it's a zodiac stone for Aquarius, Pisces, and Sagittarius.

This tranquil stone is composed of Silicone Dioxide, and its famous purple shades are caused by impurities of iron or manganese compounds.

White and dark-purple bands within cause a serene depth, making amethyst one of the most popular mineral stones today.

The word amethyst comes from the Greek "amethystus," meaning to be sober, or unintoxicated. It was associated with the god of wine, and a common practice of serving wine from amethyst goblets was thought to protect against drunkenness.

Amethyst is mined in Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay, Russia, Africa, Canada, and the United States. They form in prismatic, well shaped clusters, and inside geodes. It can also be found in volcanic pipes, or as water worn pebbles, that wash up on the shores of Nova Scotia.

Amethyst has adorned the rich and powerful for centuries. It was a personal favorite of Catherine the Great, decorates the British crown jewels, as well as adorning Priests, Bishops, and Cardinals. It has been found in the tombs of ancient Egyptians, and with the remains of Neolithic man.

Imposter stones, commonly confused with Amethyst are: Garnet, Fluorite, Apatite, and Spinel. Often, hardness is their only distinguishing factor. Any Amethyst purchases should be made from a respected dealer, or trusted jeweler to avoid imposter stones.
